Plans to create additional space for digital exams at the University Printing House (UPH), also known as the Cambridge University Press Building, at the Cambridge Press and Assessment site on Shaftesbury Road, are advancing.
The proposed project aims to provide up to 800 additional exam spaces, from Easter Term 2027, to address the lack of space suitable to meet for the growing need for digital examinations across the University. It will also help to address previously identified shortfalls in standard exam spaces. Scheduling examinations into the UPH will enable the University to increase provision for students who require reasonable adjustments for their exams.
As well as creating additional exam space, the facility will be designed to maximise flexibility and value for money, supporting alternative uses when exams are not taking place - for example teaching, seminars, conferences.
The project -which will be considered by the Planning and Resources Committee on 17 June - aligns with the University's Strategic Estate Framework. This is a time-limited use of the space, for around 5-10 years, providing time for the identification of suitable spaces for future education space provision across the existing academic estate.
